Public scholarship

I came to the Chinese feminist movement as a young journalist covering the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, and have worked in it for close to thirty years as an organizer, an educator, and a strategist.

In 2009 I founded Feminist Voices, the first and for a time the largest feminist media and advocacy platform in China, which censors shut down in 2018. From 2012 I played a formative role in the rise of China’s young feminist movement. After moving to the United States in 2015, in association with other activists, I convened the Chinese feminist community in North America.

My leadership in the movement has been recognized by the Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders, awarded by the President of France in 2022, and by the 100 Women Leaders Network of UN Women, which I joined in 2024.

I stay actively engaged with Chinese feminists in China and across the diaspora, and I speak about China's feminist movement and gender politics through lectures, writing, and interviews.

Lectures and panels

I have lectured at Yale University, Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Boston College, Indiana University, the University of Kentucky, Vassar College, the University of Hong Kong, and National Taiwan University, and at the China Institute, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Open Society Foundations, and the Robert Bosch Foundation.

My writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Made in China Journal, TRT World, The Diplomat, Dissent, Times Higher Education, ChinaFile, and Disruptive Asia, among other outlets.
